Hair removal methods

Let’s touch a very sensitive subject; hair removal! Who likes body hair anyway? Why do they grow on you? Well, there is a very specific reason for that, scientifically speaking, but we don’t want them on us! Being a woman, you need to find the best ways to get rid of the unwanted hairs all over your body, and sometimes face, and since summer is here, especially in Greece, you need hair free, glowy skin to head out to the beach. Below you will get ideas about what I find effective and affordable that you can do at home!

First comes the razor. It’s the quickest and pain free way to get your legs beach ready. I shave my legs frequently in the summer months but the downside of it is that the hairs are going to grow the next day and it will be uncomfortable since you will feel itchy.
Generally, what I go for throughout the year is waxing. I use a roll-on depilatory wax heater and mostly Simoun waxes for my legs and arms. It is very effective and the cost is minimal. The wax heater costs around 15€ and the wax itself, which will last you at least for a full application on legs and arms, costs around 2.5€, depending on the brand. You will also need wax strips to remove the wax, which cost around 2€ for 100 of them. There are some downsides of that method though. First of all, it is painful until you do it for a long time and the hair gets weaker and easier to remove. Also, your hairs need to be quite long and aesthiticians usually advise you to visit them once a month. You can imagine how much your hairs would have grown in a month, right? Also, after a long time of using this method the hairs don’t all grow at the same time, so even if you’ve waited for a whole month you might not get the smooth feeling that you’re going for. However, since you do it at home and you’re not paying 40€, at least, per visit, you can repeat it after 15 days to make sure you’ve removed the hairs that have appeared later on. The biggest advantage of this method is that the hairs are not going to reappear for another 2 weeks at least.
As I said I’m using the roll-ons only for my legs and arms, I don’t find it appropriate for the bikini line or generally your intimate area. It is more advisable to use a warm wax for this area since it will be more effective and definitely less painful. It might be tricky to wax this area at home but once you get the grip on it you will do it in 15’. I like the Veet warm wax that you can warm up in the microwave oven and it comes with wax strips and a spatula to apply the product, which indicates whether the wax is the right temperature for your body top avoid getting burnt!

Next option is using an epilator. This method is also painful and it can cause a lot of ingrown hairs, probably even more than waxing will. Also, it is an investment, since the device will cost you around 120€, depending on the brand and model. I do use this method as well, especially during summer because it can remove even the shortest hairs. I use it about 2 days after I’ve waxed my legs, to make sure there are no hairs left. It is effective but it is time consuming and it really hurts, because it removes the hairs one by one!
The last option that I’ve been using lately is laser treatment. This is not something you can do at home, although I’ve seen a few companies bringing out devices which work with light, pretty similar to laser treatment; I haven’t tried any of those. I visit a dermatologist for that and I only remove hairs on my armpits and my intimate area. This is a more permanent solution, which will give you great results if you can endure the pain. It is indeed very painful but again, the more you do it the less it hurts. For this method the hairs don’t need to be as long as for waxing, on the contrary, since you need to wait about 15 days for the hairs to fall and another 20 days for them to grow back, if they do, you then need to trim them in order to do your session. With this method your hairs become weaker and session after session most of them don’t grow back. The colour of the hairs doesn’t affect the treatment and the more sessions you do the more baby-like your skin will feel. It also prevents ingrown hairs, which I suffer from, since it burns the root hair and the follicle doen’t produce hairs anymore.  For me, this is the best solution and I find that it is not that expensive anymore. I pay 40€ for both my intimate area and armpits and this price includes the session halfway, around 15 days afterwards, that will get the hairs that you didn’t get the first time. If you live in Thessaloniki and you want more details about the doctor that I visit you can email me at beautyfulladdict.gmail.com or pm me on facebook, I’ll be more than happy to share them with you.

I hope I’ve given you some ideas of how to save money or get a more permanent solution for hair removal and I would appreciate it if you have tried something else and share it in the comment section below.

    1. Thank you! Waxing at home is the best semi-permanent solution you can go for since the hairs get weaker and some of them don't even grow back any more! x x x

  2. Hi there!
I'm having laser treatments too (armpits and face) but I don't think it's painful, not at all. At least to me, it feels significantly less painful than waxing (trust me I have decades of experience in waxing and ingrown hair lol). Do you do IPL or Alexandrite? IPL method yes, that was almost unbearable. But the Alexandrite method is really comfortable having the air cooler constantly on (and much more effective actually). Last time I visited my parents at Thessaloniki I had a session at an institute at Kalamaria, one block away from Hatzis pastry shop. They were super friendly, their machines were new and their prices were good too.

    1. To be honest I haven't tried the Alexandrite method but I've heard good things about it. What impressed me the most is that the hairs fall instantly and you don't have to wait 2 weeks. How much were the sessions approximately? Could you pm me the actual institute on facebook (BeautyFull Addict) or by email (chgeorgina@hotmail.com)? Thanks in advance! x x x

    2. Don't be fooled, the hairs don't fall instantly, they are just burned to the roots so it looks like you don't have any hair. In 10 days time, the remaining of the burnt hair falls off your skin. Within a month you must revisit to repeat the treatment (at no cost). The cost was something like 20 euros for armpits and 20 for the face but I remember my cousin (also a client of theirs) saying they announce special prices all the time. I'll ask my mum (another happy lasered lady) for the name, tel and address and I will email it to you as soon as I'll have them. xo xo

    kisses :)
